Chloe Duckworth
Chloe is a Reader in Archaeological Science and Public Engagement at
Newcastle University. Her research revolves around the scientific examination
and experimental reconstruction of ancient and traditional technologies, the
loss of technological knowledge, and the relationship between technology and
environmental/economic sustainability. She has previously researched topics
including the development of the earliest glassmaking (AHRC-funded PhD project,
2007-11), trade and technological change in the Sahara Desert (Trans-SAHARA
Project, 2014-15), and the role of recycling and reuse in the Roman economy
(British Academy Fellowship, 2015-18). She has directed major fieldwork
projects investigating urban layout and craft production zones at two UNESCO
World Heritage sites in Spain: The Alhambra, Granada; and Madinat al-Zahra,
Cordoba. Chloe is also a television presenter, co-hosting The Great
British Dig on the UK's Channel 4, and an advocate for increasing
diversity and accessibility within the UK archaeological and heritage sector
(e.g. Dig for Archaeology media campaign, 2021), appearing on BBC Radio 4,
BBC2, and in magazines and newspaper articles including The Telegraph, The
Independent, and The Daily Mail. She is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries
of London and a Member of the editorial board for World Archaeology Journal. In
2021 she was short-listed for the Council for British Archaeology's Outstanding
Achievement Award.
