Marta García
Morcillo is Research Fellow and Lecturer in Ancient History at Durham
University, and Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Classical Studies (London).
Previously, she worked at the Universities of Roehampton (London), Wales (Lampeter),
Leicester, Dresden and Heidelberg. In addition, she has been awarded among others a Humboldt
Research Fellowship and a research grant by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung. Marta’s
research revolves around the social and economic history of Ancient Rome, with
a particular interest in the study of Roman markets, financial activities and
institutions, ancient economic mentality and decision-making, as well as in the
study of value and valuation in Roman law and society. She has extensively
worked on Roman auctions. Marta is UK PI of the AHRC-DFG funded project Twisted Transfers: Discursive Constructions of
Corruption in Ancient Greece and Rome (20-23) and is currently completing a
monograph on Roman auctions, and working on a book entitled Economic Misbehaviour
and the Dark Side of Profit in
Ancient Rome (De Gruyter). Recent publications include The Real Estate Market in the Roman World (Routledge
Explorations in Economic History), Routledge 2023, and Managing
Information in the Roman Economy, Palgrave-McMillan 2021 (both coedited with C.
